The Ruth G. McMillan Cancer Center's Radiation Oncology department works with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan for radiation therapy. While most patients are seen on an outpatient basis, care is also provided to patients while hospitalized at GMH including both palliative and curative treatment of adults.
Radiation therapy, or traditional external beam therapy, is delivered by a linear accelerator. In addition, we also provide the advanced technology of Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT).
Using computer controlled linear accelerators and 3-D imagery, IMRT has the ability to treat more tumors with increased accuracy and more intensive doses of radiation with less toxicity or side effect to surrounding tissues or organs. Tumors that may otherwise be unapproachable with traditional radiation therapy, may be treatable using IMRT.
